I have had a quick look at John Goater, no record of his death in freebmd so unlikely he died in infancy which is good, then looked at 1901 census no record of John Goater who would have been 7/8 yrs old, thats also postive if he has just be registered as Goater instead of Gater. Only way to be sure is to buy birth cert...but that will have to wait til pay day!

If someone has full access to records on ancestry.com could they look at John Gater military records-ww1 medal cards. I have seen these at the records office in Kew but may have missed something. I know I can do pay as you go but that has to wait til pay day! I also dont want to do 14 day trial until i have time off work.

Thank you in anticpation!

Hi Kate
Thanks for that...i have already looked at all the John Gaters and found they were either deceased as infants or when order birth certs did not have a father with the name Frank. The John Goater is of interest though...thats one i havent come across. Will check this out a bit more.
Thanks
Marie

Are the following any use?

John William Gater Mar 1889 Wolstanton 6b 95
John Michael Gater Sep 1889 St Giles 1b 602
John Gater Dec 1889 Leek 6b 280
John Thomas Gater Dec 1889 Leek 6b 274
John Gordon Gater Dec 1890 Windsor 2c 387
John Gater Mar 1893 Wolstanton 6b 161
John Goater Dec 1893 Whitechapel 1c 307
John William Gater Mar 1894 Newcastle under Lyme 6b 68

I was just thinking, if there was a significant gap in age between John and his wife, they might have knocked a few years off one age and/or added a few to the other age to make themselves appear closer in age.

John Gater was 26 when he married in 1919 and the address given was 84 Loveridge Road the address was given for both bride and groom,im presuming this will be in Willesden or Kilburn, NW london. They married in St Cuthberts Church,Hampstead.

It's worth pointing out he's just John Gater when he marries.

What about this birth:-

Name: John Henry Gater
Year of Registration: 1897
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Holborn
County: London, Middlesex
Volume: 1b
Page: 680

The year is wrong but whoever registered his death may not have been certain of his year of birth. It's registered in the right quarter of the year for his birth to be 1st August.

Von
Could be but no way of confirming that..im hoping the red cross WW1 records that have recently been discovered may help but its likely to take years before they are accessible..i've been trying to break this brick wall since 2000 so few more years wont hurt!
Thanks

would any genealogist give weight to my circumstantial evidence? When I watch So Do you think your Royal? they seem too...or is that just for TV appeal!

Marie

Marie Report 5 May 2009 22:40

Thanks Von, but no John in that family...but who knows could have changed his name.

ozibird, thanks for that search. sadly i thought that was the missing link sometime ago esp since my gt uncle john henry's son is called Walter George but have subsequently looked into further and John Henry Gater son of Walter and Ada died when he was in his early 30's.
Thanks anyway

1911
GATER JOHN HENRY M 1898 13 Willesden Middlesex

Seems to be with a Walter George & family. It doesn't necessarily mean he was his son.

Marie Report 5 May 2009 21:56

I came across John Andrew Gater recently and this could be a possiblity but he doesnt have a birth registration either!

Marie

Marie Report 5 May 2009 21:53

!901 Census
Mary Ann Gater 40 M bn London,paddington
Maud Gater dau 14 bn london, paddington
29 Granville Rd, Willesden, London

Frank Gater
27 Granville Rd, willesden, 16 Paddington, London

There was the another entry on 1901 census that said '_Gater re to head null emp undefined address 29 Granville Rd', Willesden. This would suggest someone else lived there but error in recording?

Willesden is where John Henry lived and died.

I have Francis Gater birth cert which said his parents were living in 8 Cottage Rd, Kilburn in 1884 when he was born;names parents as Mary Ann Gater nee Yates, father Francis Gater House painter.

Mary and Francis wedding cert of Aug 1 1881 states they were living at 1 York Row they got married at Church of St Michael and all Angels, paddington and middlesex, Mary was 21 and Francis was 26.

GATER DOROTHY ELIZABETH F 1905 6 Hampstead London
