How valid is it to accept somewhat circumstantial evidence in geneology? I've been trying to break down my family brickwall for a number of years. My Gt Grandfather John Henry Gater bn Hampstead 1 August 1893 (according to death cert-died 1977). Married Mabel Bettyes 1919-Hampstead, named father as Frank Gater painter decorator/deceased on his wedding cert. A witness to the wedding is a Francis Gater. I have found records of Frank Gater/painter decorator in 1891 census with a son Francis and daughter Maude and wife Mary Ann nee Yates, all in NW London. Later census just show Mary Ann, Maude and Francis no John Henry and no Frank. Frank Gater when he was married was a soldier my gt grandfather was a soldier before and during WW1. First official evidence I can find of John Henry Gater is his medal card which shows he enlisted in 1915. I have completed all searches imaginable for JH Gater; looking at births over 10 yr period, even military births. Gater is an unsual name so how much weight should i give to this Frank Gater painter decorator in NW london being same Frank Gater painter decorator/deceased named on JH Gater wedding cert? Any thoughts? |

It seems you haven't found his birth index so don't know his parents for sure. Is that right? |

ozibird, thanks for that search. sadly i thought that was the missing link sometime ago esp since my gt uncle john henry's son is called Walter George but have subsequently looked into further and John Henry Gater son of Walter and Ada died when he was in his early 30's. |

It's worth pointing out he's just John Gater when he marries. |
