Hi
Thanks for everyone's help!
I think it was the abbreviated first names which were preventing me from finding them!
Kind regards

Lack of uniformity on the page about the relationship (e.g., son-in-law in one household and stepson in another) isn't too surprising as the enumerator's copying returns filled in by half a dozen different heads of household per page

son in law did not mean what it does today. It means adopted son, though there was no formal adoption. as such. So in your case it probably does mean that they were her husbands sons, but not hers.

Hi
I'm trying to trace the parents of William Kesterton (1850) and his brother Thomas (1847). Both born in Tamworth, staffs. In the 1871 census they were both living with an Elizabeth Kesterton born ca 1813 and were both listed as her son-in-law.
What I don't understand is how they would both be son-in law to the same woman and how their mother in law would have the same surname as themselves? I thought they might be step=sons but on the same census page a different family as a step son listed so I would imagine it's not that 'step son' terminology didn't exist.
I've tried to find them earlier but can't find any trace of them in 1851 or 1861.
Does anyone have any ideas?
