More info: Wllm Alec's potential father's 1st wife died during or shortly after childbirth, resulting in her and their infant son's death, around about the time of Wllm Alec's birth, he then doesn't marry again until mid 1880's to a girl from Cornwall, whose surname I haven't been able to ascertain. Could this be Miss Lambert? |

Wow! You guys are amazing! So supposing that this is correct: Wllm Alec Lambert is the illegitimate son of William Garmston and Miss Lambert? He registers his marriage as Wllm Alec Garmston to cover up his illegitmacy in 1914? Do you think that the age descepancy that exists on his army record and death would be more indications of his suspect birth? You might have added 5 generations to my tree in 5 minutes! Thanx xx |

Thanks for the response guys. So I'm looking for a William Alec Garmston of probable Bristol area. He served in WW1, stating he was 33 on sign up, he married in 1914 (have that cert) and died in 1928. On his marriage cert, his father is listed as William, being deceased but was a commission agent. I have searched for Wllm Alec's birth, nothing and that of his father. Also no information. I have a group of none attributable Garmston's born in Bristol at that time, but nothing that I can logically think would be him. All the William Garmston's I have already in my tree (both Bristol, London & Hull). So how can neither of them not be born? Nor his father marry or die? What can I do? I have 5 generations following, what a waste not to have them in the tree!! |

Are you sure that he was not illegitimate? It is fairly common to find a fictitious deceased father on a marriage certificate. They were invented to save face. |

I have a relative who served in WW1 and was married and died, but was never born. To this end I have only his father's name on his marriage certificate, but his father was well dead by the time he wed. I have searched endlessly to search his father and therefore link him to my tree, but his father was never born or died or married. All I know is his occupation and location, and approximate lifespan, 1850-1914. Can anyone assist in what to do next? I am at my wits end! Thanks very much xx |
