There was, apparently, an emigration scheme (similar to the 1950s one) to Australia in the 19th century for settlers. The people who took advantage of it were not convicts! |

Since he had 4 children in Australia, you should be able to get their birth certs, and that will tell you his occupation at the time. |

A man, his wife, son and daughter, leave for Australia sometime soon after 1853. (The daughter was born in 1851 and the son in 1853) They had 4 more children who were born in Australia, 1856, 1857, 1860, 1864. |
