Ok I think I worked it out.
Isabella's mother looks to have died during childbirth.
Alexander then went on to marry Janet whom I'm guessing called herself Jane well at least that was what was on Isabella's marriage record.
Although I do wonder why they swapping of mothers, ie on Issabella's birth and death records it has her biological mother but on her marriage record it has her step mother.
Well at least the mystery is solved. I thank you all again for helping me investigate this mystery and the effort put in.

Victoria,
You hit the nail on the head with them. That's the Family.
Rose,
The ones you have look like they could be the other set of names I have.
Younger Isabella has the middle name of King, so it would make sence that Isabella King was her mother, but I wonder where the other lady fits in?
Mind I'm going off track with the Plenderleigth lot. Young Isabella married my Samuel Hay and he was a great x ? uncle.
Well I'll continue this tomorrow or the weekend since it's time for bed if I want to be able to get up for work.
LOL
Thanks ladies

Joe I had a similar conundrum with an individual in my tree. Two different women were named as 'mother' across several certificates. The second woman turned out to be the individual's grandmother. The grandmother's name had been inserted where I think the actual mother had died (marriage certificate). The same man's name appeared on all certificates and all dates etc fitted. I did eventually find the mother's death certificate and the story fits. I have accepted the name insertions as an anomoly.

Perhaps the informant got it wrong?
Have you found her on a census?

I have someone on my tree with a mystery.
Isabella Plenderleith was born in Clarkston, Scotland in1863.
According to the death record (1886) I found on scotlandspeople the mother was Isabella King (deseased) and father Alexander Plenderleith.
At the marriage (1885) father was the same but the mother was a Jane P??land (I can't read the surname properly).
The ages work out and everything else seems to fit except the two mothers. I did think of remarriage but why would both be listed as mother?
Thanks Gypsyjoe
