Hi Everyone

Thank u for all your help and advice and ideas i am so very grateful xxxxxxx

This is the info I have managed to gleen since yesterday (hours and hours of searching again lol)

My great nans name was Alice Hootn she was born in Nottingham in 1887

My great grandads name was James Webb he was born at Weybridge Surrey in 1860

They married on 14/7/06 at Nottingham (I have this cert)

in 1907 they had my Grandad John Henry Arthur Webb.

However on the 1911 census although calling herself Alice Webb and having my grandad with her (whom she had changed his name to Harry) she was now saying she was single.

She was living with her Aunt & Uncle they also witnessed her first marriage.

in apr may jun 1913 Alice married George A Green in Nottingham (she had used her maiden name to get married Hooton hence me now thinking she was a bigamist)

I have been unable to trace a divorce between my great grandparents.

Alice and George went on to have 1 son Lloyd S Green in jan feb mar 1914
at Basford Nottingham.

(I am going to buy both certs tom............)

I have been unable to find a death for my great grandfather although someone pointed out to me that he may have moved to Sheffield so I am going to follow that one up.

Funnily enough my Uncle Lloyd (James & Alice's grandson) told me he had been named Lloyd after his Uncle!!!!!!!! so this seems to tie in now as I had tried in vain to find a Lloyd Webb before born to Alice & James)

I would love to pay the £40 to see if my great grandparents did divorce but I can't afford it at the mo and Paul my hubby would kill me lol.

Anyway thank u all so very much for spuring me on yesterday i feel a bit closer now to doing this bit of the jigsaw :) just wish James was flipping easier to track lol

Luv
Angie

It is really unlikely that they divorced. Have you got the 2nd marriage for ggran? Give us some names and I'm sure we'll be able to help.

The only place that seems to have divorce records for divorces not heard in the high court is the Principal Registry of the Family Division, which can be found by searching 'divorce records'. Unfortunately they will give you a form to download and charge you £40 for one ten year search.

People did commit Bigamy or they just went to live with somone. I traced a great uncle who had a different wife on 2 censuses.

He married again, I got his cert and he had lied and said he was a bachelor. His first wife didn't re marry but went to live with someone and took his name.

Hi Brinleys & Annielaurie xxx

Thank u for replying I did look for a divorce till 4am this morn :( but alas didn't find it Not sure if they were a wealthy family I do know he came from a line of engineers and went into that line of work himself (not sure if it was a well paid job) Not sure if her family were wealthy I doubt that her father was an Iron planer so don't think that was well paid.

Im still searching for a death for my great grandad

To search for a divorce on the National Archives website, go to Search the Catalogue, put in the surname and put J77 for the reference to be searched.

Assuming they did get divorced, then the record will be at the national archives, as suggested.

However, until 1923, whilst Divorce was available through a Court of Law.men wouuld need to claim adultery.Women had to claim both adultery and cruelty.

Because of the high costs, there was no divorce for poor, so unless he was from a wealthy background, the likelyhood was that there was no divorce.
