On the entry for my gr grandmother it states that she was born in Birmingham, England but the next column states that she is british by parentage. I've never been able to find a birth or marriage for her and even Birmingham Registry couldn't find a birth or marriage for them. Do I take it from this entry on the census that she was born abroad, and even married there. Any help would be appreciated. |

No. It may just mean that there is no birth registration. |

Or she could be mistranscribed somewhere ... what was her surname? |

I have the birth certificate for my grandmother Beatrice Sedgwick, on the certificate it gives her maiden name as Amy Elsmore. They are living in Birmingham on the 1911 census but the entry regarding the phrase British by parentag is a bit puzzling. |

To make it clear my grandmother is Beatrice Sedgwick (I've her birth, marriage and death certificates) her mother according to her birth certificate was Amy Sedgwick nee Elsmore. Her father was George Sedgwick, I have all his certificates. It's just Amy that's giving me trouble. |

I've found her on the 1901 and 1911 where she is married to George Sedgwick with daughter Beatrice. With no birth certificate for Amy I don't know who her parents are. With this entry on the 1911 census I just wondered if she married George abroad. I do know he served in the British Army in India for a number of years, but according to his dischage papers was unmarried when he left the army. According to the 1911 census Amy and George had been married for 18 years which would make it 1893. George appears on the 1891 census in the army guading the Tower of London. |

This is probably some sort of coincidence but I'm posting it anyway: |

Thanks for your help Jill. I'll just keep on digging and perhaps one day I'll get to the bottom of it. |
