If you sent a message by clicking on his name that would go to his 'real' email address at the time of posting this thread |

Hello Duncan, that sounds really interesting and it would be good if you can contact Warwick as suggested by jax and GB. |

UPDATE: I found reference to the name change on the internet the road was called Ball's Road after a famous Georgian gentleman called Edward Hughes Ball Hughes (AKA The Golden Ball) who owned Oatlands Estate at that time. The road changed it's name to St Mary's Road sometime later afterl all the houses were rebuilt in the Victorian era. As a weird coincidence J J Wilks's father-in-law my 4 x Great Grandfather James Watts Peppercorne bought the Oatland's estate off Ball Hughes after he went bankrupt and escaped his creditors in France. thanks again for everyone's help in finding out a fascinating story. |

Another option is to purchase a copy of a map of that area for the time in question from Alan Godfrey Maps |

I think you'd be better going to the library or county record office and asking if they had old street maps of the area. |

I have found my 3x GGrandfather James Jackson Wilks a linen merchant in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey on the 1871 census. He appears under St Mary's district in Walton-on-Thames. The address reads The Swiss Cottage, Balls Road, there doesn't appear to be a Balls Road in the area any more (just looked on google maps). Walton town center was rebuilt in the 1960s and I sure road names have changed over time, what I need to find is a map from the late 1800s that would have street names so I can try and pin point the site. I live locally so when I know where it is I can go and see it. Do you think I can find this information out on line? any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |
