Im with the Dutch ancestors theory - Id noted a number of Rodel's with the amplaut (is that how its spelt :) accent over the o in Rodel. Also, had a google using Demerera and the name Rodel and came up with this: Looks like you may still have rellies out there? |

- and tracing forward from 1851, his daughter Ellen is living with her uncle and aunt in Lancashire in 1861 - the uncle being born in Holland. |

Following mgnv's comments, and Googling for Guiana, it seems that the area was originally settled by the Dutch, and only ceded to the British in 1814. Since Ancestry calculate from the 1851 census info that he was born in 1804, you might be looking for Dutch ancestors? |

Thank you everyone for the information, his name definately was Rodel, his daughter Ellen was my gt gt grandmother. I can't find him on anyother census, neither can I find his marriage certificate or death certificate, he seems to have appeared in 1851 then disappeared again. The other trees with him in them have no more information than I have. Regards Cherryl |

Right, found the right one now - looks like Demerara to me -probably had a military/naval dad? or as it says gentleman as occupation, may be land owner BUT on the image the name looks like Rudil to me - are you sure you have the right bloke? How have you worked back to him? |

Demerara is the old name for Georgetown and the neighbouring countryside. Georgetown is the capital of Guyana, formerly British Guiana. In my youth, brown sugar was called Demerara sugar, but I've no idea if it is still called that, nor if it actually came from there. |

I am looking for Richard George Rodel, I can only find him in 1851, with the name Rudell, his place of birth is DENZERARA, I have looked this up on Google and cannot find it, does anyone have an idea where this may be? I cannot find Richard in any other census. Many Thanks Cherryl |
