Could someone offer some suggestions on the following please?

Gwendoline Stevens born 2/2/1929
Mother Cissie King
Father Colin James Stevens

Cissie King married Colin Stevens July,August, September 1915

Cissie King remarried Edward Porter July,August,September 1927

On marriage cert for Gwendoline on 4th June 1949 father Colin Stevens shows a deceased.

Cissie remarried 1927, Gwendoline born 1929.

All info correct as I knew Edward and Cissie Porter, Gwen was my mother.
I can find no record of death for Colin Stevens.

Any suggestions as to why this should be. Would be grateful for any help, thank you

Is this the marriage you are referring to?

Surname First name(s) Spouse District Vol Page

Marriages Sep 1927 (>99%)

Jackson Samuel Pett W.Ham 4a 625
<<King Margaret H Porter W.Ham 4a 625
Pett Harriett S Jackson W.Ham 4a 625
<<Porter Edward A King W.Ham 4a 625

Was Cissie known as Margaret?

If she was previously married to Colin Stevens the remarriage should be in the name of Stevens.

This must be the 1st marriage.

Marriages Sep 1915 (>99%)

Hart Gladys A M Jenkins Croydon 2a 933
Jenkins Arthur E Hart Croydon 2a 933
<<<King Cissie Stevens Croydon 2a 933
<<<Stevens Colin J King Croydon 2a 933

It would appear the marriage to Edward Porter must be after 1929.

Hi Christine
The first post is not the right one. The second one is right.
I must be making a mistake somewhere but my info is limited. Thanks for that though, will keep thinking!!

Thought your first reference was right but Porter would have married Stevens or did people revert to their maiden names?? My dilema because I thought the first was right for Porter.

This is the only Stevens/Porter marriage that comes up on FreeBMD in 1927:-

Marriages Sep 1927
Stevens James - Porter Kathleen - Leyburn 9d 1447

When Cissie King married Colin J. Stevens in 1915 her name is recorded as just Cissie, so that's what she should be called for any further marriage.

The 2nd marriage should be in the name of Cissie Stevens and as Gwendoline was born 1929 with father Colin Stevens the Edward Porter marriage must be after 1929.

It means searching all the individual years qtr by qtr as free BMD doesn't cover those years.

Thanks Kath, this is not a connection. I know all the names are right just not sure now if the marriage Porter/King is right.
Finding it very frustrating, been looking for ages now.

Jenny Report 17 Dec 2008 20:33

Thanks for that Christine, that could take some time!!

Jenny

Jenny Report 17 Dec 2008 20:36

Kath, does that mean there is no surname recorded then? It's difficult because some people revert to maiden name and some don't. Is there any rule on marriages and surnames for women do you know?

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 17 Dec 2008 20:42

Sorry, I've confused you. She was married the first time as Cissie King. I just meant that Cissie was obviously her full name and it wasn't a nickname for Margaret or anything else.

The second time she married she should have married as Cissie Stevens.

Thanks Kath, I think my brain is just a bit tired!! lol.

Are you certain that Cissie and Edward actually married. Between the wars a lot of marriages broke up and the people involved often just went on to live as man and wife with another partner as divorce was expensive and difficult to get.

My own in-laws did this.

Kath
I hadn't thought of that, I just assumed they had married. That would certainly solve the reason as to why it seems so confusing.
There are quite a few skeletons in this side of the family so it is more than likely that that is the case. I also think that Cissie was adopted so it is giving me lots of headaches. I will continue to search and think that now is the time to actually get the certs for Cissie and go backwards. I'm trying to trace her sisters who are possibly still alive and I'm just searching every avenue. Thank you for your help it is appreciated.

Sorry that's confusing, trying to trace Gwendolines sisters.....not Cissie!!

Is this Cissie's birth:-

Volume: 2a
Page: 239

KathleenBell Report 17 Dec 2008 21:04

There are these births in Croydon on FreeBMD:-

Births Mar 1916
Stevens Irene M - King Croydon 2a 630

Births Mar 1920
Stevens Patricia P - King Croydon 2a 834

Births Jun 1923
Stevens Millie - King Croydon 2a 642

Births Mar 1929
Stevens Gwendoline I - King Croydon 2a 598

Are these the sisters you are looking for?

Yes that's the one I have. Another kind person found a Cissie on the 1901 census but she is recorded as being adopted and I don't know if it is the correct Cissie. It does seem to be a bit of an unusual name though, so maybe. King isn't though!!

I would say that is the most likely birth for Cissie and that she is the one who is recorded as "adopted daughter" on the 1901 census Her adoptive parents on the census are given as Edwin and Annie King. It might be worth ordering the birth certificate to see who the birth parents were recorded as. Perhaps Edwin and Annie were related to her parents. (maybe they were her aunt and uncle??)
