I'm intrigued. Maggie Campbell (b. Cowes JAS 1879) is noted as living in Pelham Cottage in 1891 Census (I was searching for her brother Martin) but she doesn't appear in GR's Search lists anywhere. How could I trace what happened to her? I've checked GR's Marriage and Death Record s1891 to 1901 (she doesn't show up here at all) Any ideas where I might start my search as GR record fail to show her anywhere ? Why?

As I understand it, GR only point you to other sites - they don't hold the info themselves.
Try FreeBMD for all births marriages and deaths up to about 1920 - this is the URL - http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Jill is correct, GR don't have their own records, & their credits are a very expensive way of doing it. They don't have 1881 as it's free on familysearch. Try a free trial at Ancestry.co.uk for other censuses.
Martin & Maggie are with their mother, Mary, wife of a mariner in 1881.
Check familysearch for more info.

Mistranscribing on ancestry!!!
As Jill said, GR direct you to other sites, they don't carry the official records themselves .... and it is the most expensive way to do your research.
Apart from the official records, the only way you will find someone's name on GR is if another member has entered that name in their tree.
GR is really just a carrier of information entered by members or taken from other sites.
I couldn't find Maggie on the 1901 Census ......... she could have married or died.
To see if you can find out more:-
Go to www.freebmd.org.uk, it is a free site that carries the bmds for England and Wales from July 1 1837 (when registration began). Volunteers are entering the information, and are currently up to about 1925/1930. Hopefully, they will soon complete the task up until 1983.
www.ancestry.org.uk carries the Complete Index to bmds for England and Wales from 1837 to ca 2006 ................... but it is an index which has to be searched quarter by quarter, year by year.

Island
Other sites offer far more than GR
........ and it is also more expensive on GR, especially if you are paying per view.
Most of us have found that we depend on ancestry, usually ancestry.co.uk .......... they carry not only censuses, but the Complete Index to bmds, records from WW1 and WW2, phone books, baptism and marriage records from ca 1550 to the 1900s, etc etc.
The initial susbcription may seem steep ...... but it's invaluable!
Another site is findmypast.com .... some people prefer this to ancestry.
Interestingly, the census transcriptions are different on ancestry and on findmypast.
Then you have the free sites ......... www.familysearch.org, with all its possible problems, is a free site, and it carries the 1881 UK census, the 1880 US census, and baptism records .... just ake sure that you are very wary of Submitted records which can be inaccurate.

Each of the main sites has their own index transcription and some will have more errors than others. For example, Ancestry's 1901 census seems to have many more omissions and errors than the 1901 on-line site, the original government sponsored one. Perhaps they did a rush job to get it on line quickly, and it shows.
Ancestry's 1851 census was also problematical, but It has improved, so perhaps they have been correcting errors over a period of time.
For census record, GR, Gold subscription is by far the cheapest.. As mentioned, GR don't hold any records but offer access to other sites.
Pay per view is not a rip off as some keep suggesting and for many it may be the best they can afford. The problem is that you don't know whether the record you have found is of any use until you pay top see it, and are then annoyed if it not the one you want. You just need to be aware of this.
Horses for Courses as the saying goes, it all depends on your budget and what exactly it is you are looking for. There is no such thing as "The Best" site - they are all a bit different.
