Going by when census was held 30 March 1851 I would say that the second Hannah Aston would be the closer match for Birth.

If he asked for the name of her father and his profession but NOT if he was alive or deceased ............... then she has given him the answer to the direct question!

She was of full age (or so she says!!) being 21, and so father's permission was not required.

Status of fathers on marriage certs

Deceased generally means dead but can mean ficticious father to cover illegitimacy (and hence better out of the way) or in a few cases where the person would rather nobody tried to contact them.

No mention of deceased then person can be alive or dead depending on whether anybody asked if they were dead. I have a lot where I know the father is dead but it doesn't say deceased.

right i have there marriage cert here and she calls herself anne aston on here it was jan 10th 1874 she is 21 her father is thomas aston engineer, and he's not down as deceased so that kinda blows the 1855 death out the water

I also checked the image and it does look like Aston.

So Anne/Hanna also had a brother Robert T aged 7 on 1861 census. And thanks to Ivy the Hughes also fits. There are 2 BMD entries for a Robert Thomas Aston born Wirral in 1852.

Adam, I know it looks like we have sent you all over the place, but this really does look like your family.

Print out what you have and check it through. I usually have one page for each bit of information as makes it easier to sort. Cut and paste into a word document then print.


Still looking for the marriage of Hannah Hughes and Thomas Aston. Also a death for Hannah nee Hughes.

For 1861, Ancestry has a Hannah "Ashlaw" aged 9 b Birkenhead. Looking at the image, the enumerator does add a flourish to a final letter n, so this could well be Ashton - misheard for Aston?

This 9 yr old is with an uncle, David Hughes, b Ireland.

Could be - I was just thinking, my great-great-great grandma who was always named as Hannah Holcroft on the census turned up in the baptism records at the local church as "Annie Oldcroft" - I suppose you can see how Annie/Anna/Hannah might be mixed up or misheard somehow.

this is a bit of a nightmare is'nt it do you think anne was really called hannah ?

Robin, I think you have her for 1871. I still cannot find her in 1861, I would think she may be with a relative somewhere.

I cannot find a Marriage yet for Hannah Hughes, still looking But think this is her on the 1841 Census, Taking into account Bury is very close to Manchester. It is just a train of thought for you to ponder.

I googled Birkenhead and the district is Wirral.

Have gone to try and find a death for Hannah Aston (1824) and see if she is on any other census, also Anne or Hannah Aston 1850.

I found this Thomas Aston on the 1841 Census. ad wondered if he was the one?


Remember that ages are rounded down to the closest 5 years on the 1841, and relationships are not given.


But this looks like a Thomas aged between 15 and 19 (ie, 1826 to 1830, with his parents, and a sister called Hannah
