As per my posts on here earlier, you really cannot get a better service than with the relevant Register Office where possible. I quite often find that a phone chat with them can give you quite a bit of information. Some of them are local Historians as well.

Perhaps we should all write to Ancestry complaining that newbies will be unaware they can buy the certs for only £7.

As you can see I am overseas, I'm not about to phone long distance to a registry office at some ungodly hour (for me) of the morning!!

I now order certificates only from GRO, at £7 a time, charged to my credit card.

The first 3 certificates I ordered, I ordered from Oldham Registry Office ....... they charged £7 for each certificate PLUS £1 per certificate for postage (because I couldn't supply a UK stamp). The certificates came in the same envelope, and I'm quite sure that it didn't cost £3 in postage!

In addition ..... I had to go to the bank to buy a money order, which incurred a further charge

AND I had to go out and try to find an envelope size that came close to the A4 which is what they then required.



It's much cheaper and easier for those of us overseas to use GRO than it is to use the local Registry Office.


Also ...... don't forget that some Registry Offices are apparently refusing to supply certificates for genealogical purposes.

thanks for all your posts, i have been away for the weekend at a famil;y history fair which is why i havnt got back to this thread til now.

I ususally get my certs form GRO as it is easy to do online, especially if ordering multiples, however i have ordered a death cert direct from one of the essex registry offices and i have to say the service was excellent and i recieved the cert by return of post

but as Sylvia said, not all registry offices will provide certificates so you have to check first.

i am fairly new at this, but i was lucky enough to have 3 death certificates to pick up only about 10 miles from where i live, the staff were most helpful when i phoned and told me once i had filled in the forms to go off shopping and they would ring me on my mobile once the certificates were ready which they did, they knew that i wanted them for the family tree, so i am quite alarmed to read that some offices wont supply them for this. i have obviously been lucky so far, but it is good to have a warning that this might happen. thanks

Ringwood office did the same for me. Even apologised for not being able to do it while I waited as they had a wedding coming in !! Really friendly too.
