could anyone advise me as to which is the easiest way to look for records of a merchant seaman during the years 1920-1950 . i have been on archive (national) site but it all gobblygook to me . am i right in thinking i really do have to pay them a visit . i dont mind doing that but im not sure where my records would be stored as they mention a number of places. i thank everyone who can give me some info as i have been wondering what to do next for weeks now |

Have a look at the National Archives Research Guide for Merchant seamen 1913-1972. This will tell you what sort of records they have and where to find them. To get to the guides, click on research at the top of the home page (in red), go to research guides, then click on the letter M. |

The later Merchant Seamen documents are original documents, and you're not allowed to look at them. You order them at Kew and a copy is done for you by the staff. They are really informative and often include a photo! |
