Margaret,
I`m not sure who is family and who`s not, but i wrote down everything i found re: Gillams. I have ordered Alberts birth cert, so come the end of the week i should know who his parents were. It was very interesting looking at the records but did`nt find any graves.

Trudy.
Lucky you being in the area and able to go to see the church records. You cant have better proof than that.

Did you find any more of your family while you were there?

Margaret,
It was such a lovely day yesterday decided to visit the Church and graveyard at East Coker. I was able to look at the records in the church, and found a baptism for a Edmund Gillam 1836 Feb 14th. It states that his parents are George and Mary.
Regards Trudy

MaryfromItaly Report 12 Oct 2008 19:09

No idea, but a lot of people seemed to switch between their first and middle names.

Another possibility is that the forms were not filled in very legibly by the head of the household, and when the enumerator copied them onto the schedules you can see on Ancestry, he misinterpreted some of the names.

Edmund could easily be mistaken for Edward, and I suppose a very scrawly Charlotte might just about be mistaken for Elizabeth. Charlotte isn't shown anywhere with the middle name Elizabeth, and I wouldn't have thought she'd have used that name as she already had a sister Elizabeth.

I don't think Charlotte died and Edmund married her sister Elizabeth, because she's Charlotte again in 1881, and she clearly died in 1900.

I haven't been able to work out how the Edmund who married Jane was related to the younger Edmund who married Charlotte (if at all). They definitely weren't father and son, because their ages are too close together, and anyway, the younger Edmund's father was George.

I haven't found a baptism for the older Edmund on the IGI, FreeReg or Pallot's.

Hi Mary,
I am totally confused why would the family start changing there names in 1871 and change them back in1881. Is there a mystery going on?

Here are Edmund and Charlotte in 1871.

Charlotte's calling herself Elizabeth, Edmund's name looks like Edward and Albert Edmund has become Edmund, but it appears to be the same family; all the other names, dates and places fit. The identification seems to be clinched by the fact that the wife's mother is called Annie Russell, and Russell was Charlotte's maiden name.

With grateful thanks to all of you looking into the Gillam saga for me. You will all soon be fed up with hearing the name Gillam, i know i am. This side of the family has caused problems from day 1.
Sometimes i think i am not meant to find out anything about them.

Can't find them in 1871 but agree with mary that they seem to be the same family with 2 sons named Albert.

Sorry Mary I cant recheck because my Ancestry sub is expired.
The information was found on previous thread that was accidently deleted.
I only remember there were mistranscriptions of the name Gillam/Gilliam/Gillham but cannot remember which census .
On the 1881 census Edmund Gillam junior suggests his father is also Edmund. Can you check the earlier census ? with the possible mistranscriptions in mind

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 12 Oct 2008 00:10

Where are you getting that information, Margaret? Have I missed something?

The Edmund and Charlotte with sons Albert born in 1860 and 1880 seem to be the same couple.

The older couple are Edmund and Jane, who don't have a son Albert.

Just for those who might want to look again for the Gillam family. On one census they are Gilliam. On another Gillham.

My Ancestry sub has expired so I cant look myself
