Oh interesting thought about Ethel changing her name but surely she would have changed her first name too or there's no point of it.

Bev

Bev Report 9 Sep 2008 23:35

yes scribe i would think that also

if it wasnt for the fact that avril's mother had contact with her sisters during her life in oz

and they are the girls i posted earlier in the thread

so def not ethel winifred

~Summer Scribe~ Report 9 Sep 2008 23:32

Not read the full thread, but I suspect that he went back to the first Ethel and it's her that he emigrated with. Any other reason I can think of wouldn't make sense for the different name on birth certs.

Just to confirm migrants didn't require a passport. They were given documents to enable them to travel but not a passport as we know it.

Good Luck with solving your mystery.

Cheers Gerry

Bev Report 9 Sep 2008 22:09

oh s**t

no is the easy answer to that

but

we have the birth of ethel evans and the birth of ethel winifred

so

it would mean that ethel winifred assumed the identity of ethel evans, rather then just changed names

this is getting weird lol

bev

SylviaInCanada Report 9 Sep 2008 22:06

But are you sure that the Ethel Evans whose death you know about was not Ethel Winifred who had earlier changed her name??

As you haven't found Ethel Winifred .......................

Bev

Bev Report 9 Sep 2008 22:01

sylvia

have proved that ethel evans and ethel rabbitts were 2 different women

so thats that theory out of the water

we have a death for ethel evans, but not ethel rabbitts

not looked at divorce yet, mainly cos i not sure how to

bev

SylviaInCanada Report 9 Sep 2008 21:52

some suggestions

Did you actually need a passport to move from the UK to England in those days?? See my story below.

I assume you have not found a divorce from Ethel Winifred

Therefore, there could have been problems with him emigrating with a de facto wife and a legal wife still in existence?

OR could Ethel Winifred have changed her name for some reason?

In fact, I have heard of another case where someone emigrated to Asutralia around that same time when in a de facto relationship. All took the de facto name, including one who was not of that relationship. No questions were asked ........... which indicates that a passport or documents were not needed.

well as i cannot find ethel winifred after 1939 marriage

but i have anecdotal evidence from ethel may evans daughter avril

god

i wonder which woman she grew up with?

then there are the photos she sent

bear a striking resemblance to my Rabbitt family, even my mother could see it

a very square jaw line

Surely Ethel would have to travel on a passport which showed her date of birth?
Does the date of death of Ethel correspond with the 1917 or 1919 date?

Could he have had a child with one person, ..she died? so he returned to wife and had other children?

It would seem a far fetched plan to give false evidence on the childrens' birth certificates,Why claim they were Ethel Winifred's children.

Have you checked the electoral lists for the addresses shown as the home address for the family at the time of the births.
That might show who he was living with.

What a puzzle........

well we think he lied gwyn, cos he had to produce a marriage cert

but why have the second and third child got ethel Rabbitts as mmn on birth certs and the first ethel mmn evans?

Gwyn in Kent Report 9 Sep 2008 19:12

So unless he lied, he travelled with Ethel ( Rabbitts) going by her birthdate ?

Why couldn't he at least have chosen someone with a different first name, to avoid confusion?

Have you found the date of birth for the 2nd Ethel?

The Archives of Australia site shows Ethel nee Rabbitts, as you say.
Surely they have different birth dates ?

got a bit of a riddle, that may or may not have been explained.

here goes

1939 harry william chilten marries ethel winifred Rabbitts

he goes to war, returns 1944 and is dumped by his wife, i can find no children of this marriage

harry meets up with ethel may Evans and has 3 children 1)Barry, 2)avril b 1949 and 3)tess

in 1954 he emigrates to autralia with ethel evans and the children

on the migration papers he states he is married and wifes name ethel winifred Rabbitts

on the birth certs of the 2 younger girls, ethel winifred Rabbitts is named as mother

i have found ethel may Evans and her parents and siblings so we def talking 2 different women here

so why

a) would he name his ex wife on the migration papers

b)put her on the 2 youngest birth certs? (the eldest boy barry has ethel may Evans cited on his birth cert

we know about the death of ethel evans

but i cannot trace ethel winifred rabbitts after the 1939 marriage

so back to the original question

would there be some reason for emigration for an ex wife rather that a current partner be named?

thanks for you patience

lol
