hi valerie et al

have looked at that site and the links valerie and like you, didnt come up with Ethel Evans/chilton/rabbitts

i will email avril with the link and see if she can contact them and get more details, will also ask her when her dad died.

well without further details i think i have hit the perverbial brick wall

not sure i will ever get to the bottom of this!!

if anyone has a sudden flash of inspiration please let me know!!

thanks for all you hard work

Bev - have responded on other board re S Aus death records. 'South Aus Genealogical Soc.' has brief death info on-line -has a Harry Wm Chilton d1983 and a couple of Ethel May Evans 1981/3.) (They do $5 look-ups.) ..Valerie

valerie

thanks for that

one theory is that ethel evans died in uk before harry went to oz, hence harry has custody of barry.

but that means a qtr by qtr search of deaths from 1947 -1954 at least!

i now know that the ethel that went to oz died july 1975 in Mt Gambier, south aus

anyone help with a look up for her death?

could be in the name Evans or chilton or poss Rabbitts

thanks

Me too -in 1951 - no passport required. I can see why Ethel assumed the name 'nee Rabbitts' - Harry used HIS (1939) marriage cert and decided Ethel (Mk2) assume the wife's details.....thus matching 2 of the chns b certs. (not sure how they accepted Barry's b cert showing different mother) ...I suppose Ethel (Mk2) could have written/ produced a 'custody consent' form for Barry - ('supposedly' from 'the other woman') - for immigration -unknown to them she WAS his mother!). .... Bev
That was what I thought at first, but you said ( page 2 ) that Ethel had contact with her sisters, so I thought then that you were talking of Ethel May's sisters

..... I think I'll have to go and search my JONES in Wales for some light relief from this puzzle, ...Lol

hi all

well have checked ancestry and found birth reg for chilton/rabbitts children (just one, avril)

i need to check the deaths, but it will mean another qtr by qtr search!

ethel may Evans (or was it chilton or Rabbitts) died in 1975 in australia, prob is i dont know which area

have emailed avril asking her for an area so i can look up this death !

thanks for all the interest and the tips

Bev

am working on the theory that Harry had an affair with Ethel may Evans resulting in Barry b 1947

then went back to his wife and it was indeed ethel winifred nee rabbitts who went to oz

Re Sylvia's query: I think one did need a passport in 1954. I think that, like Canada, Australia had no seperate citizenship until the late 1940s, and prior to that they were all British subjects. Until the changes last year, the Act governing Australian citizenship was the 1948 one, so that's probably when Australian citizenship started.

..just another suggestion ...can you contact any of these Ethels sibblings' familes -they may know whether or not their 'Aunt Ethel' went to Australia. ....Valerie

I reckon this calls for a DNA test......usually used to settle paternity, not questioned motherhood.

Good luck with your searches.
Do please let us know if you solve the mystery.

I think that Bev has been in contact with the daughter, from info. given in this thread.

The given birthdate on the Australia Archives site is nearer to the birth of Ethel May, ..... if they told the truth !

Do the children still live in Australia? if so a search on the current electoral register may show Barry, he's only 61. The girls would be more difficult to find as they may have married.

So -seems Harry had an affair with Ethel May Evans -resulting in Barry b 1947 ......so she emigrated to Oz under the assumed name of (alias) 'Ethel Winifred Rabbits'. ..... (easily done...new country/new name! I'm sure plenty have done the same!) So...could the REAL Ethel Winifred Chilton (nee Rabbitts) have re-married in UK ?...... (after 7 yrs 'desertion'). ....... ..Valerie

Bev

Bev Report 10 Sep 2008 01:04

thanks valerie

but my ethel winifreds dad was seward and the other ethel mays dad was henry

i have the birth cert for ethel winifred which states father as seward as does her marriage cert to harry chilton
i have put the othe ethels birth reg up earlier on the thread

i cannot find a death for ethel winifred and avril in oz has the death cert for ethel evans

it is a puzzle cos so many details overlap

In case this helps -the NSW/BMD has a death for Ethel Chilton in 1967 (father shown as Joseph) -would this be your Ethel? .....Maybe this is the one you have? ... I'm inclined to think there's only one Ethel, - maybe her 'baptism' cert (states 'Ethel May' - (or 'Ethel Winifred'). .. What do the 'chn' have to say? ...Is there a d cert for Harry? ....Valerie (WA)
