Perhaps i should censor my last reply, i mentioned five different sites (in the sense of fair play and avoiding favoritism you understand).

I didnt Julie - it didnt occur to me - it was said in general in case GR didnt like us mentioning another site. Im sorry if you took it personally - but that is your choice.

Im not going to continue with your argument, its tiring, its boring and its so irrelevant and petty.

I will not respond.

You didn't forget anything otherwise you wouldn't of done it ...If you hadn't of use the words accused of touting which you know i said to you then i wouldn't of said anything......Don't play me for a fool.

I am also a member of FTF and go on there quite offten as my friends that left here are there, but trust me if i have something to say i'll say it

When anyone asks for the best site for searching bmd or census etc then sites are recommended.

Just because i or anyone else may suggest that Ancestry, Freebmd or Findmypast is available are we touting those sites? And if so, why is that not ever flagged up as such?

Rarely does anyone mention Rootschat on here, on occassions yes but not very often.

GR is predominantly about offering a place to add your tree, search records (via what in all honesty is a rather expensive system) and offers an old fashioned system of boards, whereas FTF and Rootschat are primarily aimed at gathering sources of info and sites together in one place, as well as having a far more advanced system of boards available offering advice and hints. GR is more general in both the topics and layout used, more biased to tree building, whereas FTF and Rootschat offer both the broad spectrum of family tree building advice, more specialised sections about specific types of research and more bias towards family history, not just finding bmd and census events but putting meat on the bones.

Rootschat use sticky threads on each forum, FTF has the Wiki, two solutions to the same situation.......gathering together a huge amount of information and resources together in one place and that is something that GR just cannot deliver with the system currently used.

Rarely does anyone complain about the reference threads i have added here, be it the ones about Gedcom files or the ones about census searching or certificates, they are seen as a useful bit of info but the visual versions on FTF are much more user friendly and easier to follow hence the fact i add the links to the screenshot versions in the threads here.

Touting - Yes maybe but...

By the time someone reads this, they have already paid their subs to GR. so they are not going to lose revenue

If someone has a query that cant be answered here and there is a chance it can be in FTF ( or any other site for that matter) then why the dickens NOT direct them there? There is a wikipedia section on FTF that contains stacks of info and if it helps just one person, than all well and good.

This world is big enough for everyone

I don't know what FTF is, please advise, and I don't agree that there is never any aggro co I have caused some myself - and apologised for so doing!

In the main, though, we are all here to help each other,.

Julie, it didnt cross my mind, though obviously it did yours. I dont think it can be sly when it was used as a clear heading. I am not a sly person.

It wasnt a cheap shot at you at all, it was a general observation.

Please dont take over the thread with your personal grievances which I and apparently everyone else had forgotten about and would advise you to do ditto.

I cant help saying though, one of the great bonuses of FTF is the total lack of pointless bickering - which is why it was first created.

I apologise Julie, your post followed mine and I put 2 and 2 together and got 5.

I now realise that your "pop at me" was about touting and not cross posting.

Er Ron

Seeing as you didn't start the thread and it not your heading i can't see how you thought i was talking about you.....And yes i've seen you about so you are wrong there too.

You might not recognize my name but im sure others do & i've been a member on here since Jan 2003

Ron

Ron Report 9 Sep 2008 23:21

You obviously do not know me like the rest of the subscribers do Julie.

I have been a member on here for a few years and I consider myself very knowledgeable on FH and know quite a bit about computers and family history software.

I answer help questions on these boards every day.

It was NOT a pop at you in fact I don't even recognise your name.

It was intended as a general constructive critisism and I am very much offended by your statement.

Was your heading a sly dig at me by any chance...bit of a cheap shot really

Theres people on here too that are more than happy to help new members

Heather

Heather Report 9 Sep 2008 20:04

Appreciate that Ron.

Have to say Im a bit guilty on the computer board front as some days messages go unanswered so I bung my query elsewhere.

Ron

Ron Report 9 Sep 2008 17:54

Are you talking about the Computer board Ron and the Family Tree Program help?

I often think perhaps the computer board could be amalgamated.

Both really Heather.

It depends on what questions are asked and where but some posters stick the question not only on different boards of the same site but also on different boards on both GR and FT Forum.

It's very annoying and a complete waste of the helpers time to spend time answering a question when it's already been answered elsewhere.
