Has anyone any idea how I can trace the origin of my husbands ggg grandfather. He was born c1800 and married in london 1833 - I also have reference to him disolving a business partnership in london 1832. He is listed as from foreign parts on the 1841 census then went and died before 1851 when there seems to be more detail! Have just ordered his death cert but don't expect any help from that so seem to be stuck. Also unable to track down either of his sons in 1851/61 so wondering if they could be abroad but no idea in which country I should be looking.

yes we think its probably German - looking for Paul Joseph Axmann, 3 children all born here Paulina, Edmund and Riland, would like to be sure and perhaps trace him further back. Just checked National Archive but no record of him other than his will which dosn't give any clues as to his birth place.

sorry paul - just got ahead of myself, arthur and franks father was also frank george axmann son of edmund son of paul.
this is all a bit of a mystery as frank senior was born frank lewis with a brother edmund and a sister ann. his birth cert shows him as the son of ann and edmund lewis (deceased) mothers maiden name pegg. Ann lewis is on 1881 census as a widow with the three children but marries edmund axmann 1883. the maiden name she states on franks birth cert is her mothers and on her marriage cert she is a single woman not a widow and names her father correctly as robert lewis. edmund dies within months of the marriage, ann dies before 1991 census and I can find no reference on the census for any siblings in 1891, marriage for Annie Axmann in 1895, Edmund Axmann on 1901 married to stella (born spain) - she dies 1912 then marriage to potts in 1915. No record of frank axmann untill 1901 census. Family story of name change a few generations back so trying to discover if Edmund Axmann senior was the father to these children - we do have a small printing plate which belonged to edmunds brother riland axmann who was an architect but died in 1879 aged 40 with no wife or children, sister Paulina also never married and lived with her brother untill her death in feb 1883 - one month before edmund marries ann lewis.

yep - have ordered that death cert today - also references to him in the london gazette - he dosn't seem to have been a very good businessman lol neither does his son edmund.
so far i have birth and death cert for riland (because of the printing plate we always assumed he was the direct ancestor), death cert for paulina, marriage cert for edmund senior, death cert for edmund senior, birth cert for frank lewis(believe to be axmann), marriage cert for annie axmann (to robert neville) marriage cert for edmund axmann to eleanor potts (unable to find record of marriage to stella so far) marriage cert for frank axmann senior(to kate beazor) and death cert for frank axmann senior.
today have ordered death certs for paul axmann, ann axmann (wife) and ann axmann (wife of edmund senior). next month will order other 2 birth certs for ann and edmund lewis (who seem to have changed their names to axmann) to check fathers details against the one i have for frank.
maybe one day all will become clear???
