You can only search for births under the mother's maiden name from mid-1911. It isn't shown in the indexes before that . |

LOL, sorry, I meant 20th century. Freebmd is being transcribed so that it is name searchable by wonderful volunteers and they are working there way through but most of the records end in the first couple of decades of the 20th century at the mo. BUT still very very helpful. |

Thanks Heather wish I had thought of this before, spent loads! but it's worth it, you get quite hooked. Don't know about records going back as far as the 10th century, I'm having trouble just trying to get my mum to part with her mother's maiden name! Can records for Scotland and Ireland be accessed on this site? |

Janie - DONT buy any credits for dates up to the first decade of the 20th century - all bmd are available free on freebmd AND. Get an ancestry.co.uk sub - or at least a 14 day free trial for all census information and lots more. |

Hi can anyone help me, new to this, doing quite well so far but have now hit a blank. To search for a marriage, when you haven't a clue what the married surname is, do you have to trawl through all the male names in that time period or can you search through the female maiden name? |
