I know this is very specific. but we have come across an Ada Vaux in our family. She has a birth and marriage record, but does not appear under this name in the census reports. She was born in Birmingham about 1869 and married 1889, so it is the 1871 and 1881 census reports I am looking at. It is an unusual name so I wonder if anyone has any ideas? (I have posted on the Vaux board, thought I'd widen my search!)
Thanks!
Jan

Claire, I do know what you mean and I have ordered same. However, I thought that if her name has been mis-transcribed then maybe all the family has, so I still won't find them.
Thanks for replying!

You would have a better chance of finding a mistranscription if you had an idea of the name of one of the parents.

Hi "betty"!
his is very interesting, thank you. My Ada - by this time married to Hugh Lewis - is down as being born in Birmingham. I'm never quite sure how liberal to be with the information on the census reports! I guess the marriage certificate will be very helpful now!

Hi Janet:

My direct ancestor was a Vaus. My Vaus/Vaux families lived in Sussex in the 1700's and Surrey in the 1800's (direct ancestor was in Canada in 1857).

Our spellings vary from Vaux (according to family lore, how it was originally spelled), most commonly Vaus, and in one case, the earliest recording I can find, Vous.

If you are having trouble finding family, they may have changed it, or been recorded as Vaus. Also, Vaus is commonly mistranscribed as Vans. Hope all of this makes sense! :)

PS Some of my distant rellies have found family in England in the late 1800's with Vause spelling

Sylvia,

That's a different Ada Vaux.

Here are the two births:

Births Mar 1869
Vaux Ada Birmingham 6d 133

Janet needs the second one.

Hi Lisa,

Were you asking about the pronunciation at one point?

I just found the same Vaux family in Birmingham as Faulks, Folks, Folkes and Faux depending on the census or the BMD. That gives you an idea.

Wow, thanks everyone! The Vaux name really is tricky isn't it?
I think the Yorkshire Ada might well be mine - got a message this morning from someone with Clarence Lewis (her son) born Birmingham and Ada born in Leeds in their tree.
Can't thank you all enough for your efforts.
With my best wishes

It's me again!
Well now. I think Ada might well have been born in Birmingham, and just maybe the contact I mentioned had followed the wrong Ada path! I have obtained certificates for both her birth and her marriage to Thomas Lewis. My problem now is that I cannot find this family before Ada's marriage (in 1889). There should be Thomas and Mary Vaux (her parents) plus Ada of course. I have tried name variations with no joy.
Is it pushing my luck to ask for help again?
Thanks all.
Jan
PS should I make this search a new thread do you think?
