I do find it amazing to see the variations on the spelling of the surname though.

Will look on freeBMD to see if I can find Michael's birth - it would be good to get his birth certificate so as to know his mother's maiden name.

Registration began in 1837 but was not compulsory until 1875. You could try the FreeBMD using various spellings of the name for both him & his younger brother Daniel.

Just realized, summat's wrong! The parents aged 30 years between 1871-1881.

Thank you for finding Michael on the 1881 census - and I like the different spelling of the surname - maybe his birth was registered under this spelling.

I thought that all births after 1837 had to be registered - how else to find the mother's maiden name?
