Sue in Somerset

Sue in Somerset Report 17 Jun 2008 22:49

I don't think those of us not using our full names are hiding because we are afraid to be associated with our opinions William.

Many of us do use our own first names or enjoy choosing a forum name which seems appropriate.

I think (and maybe this is more so with women) that we do feel a bit concerned that total strangers might be able to find out a lot about us if they know our full names. In my own case googling would give people my e-mail address, places I've lived, a school I went to as well as photos of me and the work I do. I don't mind sharing that with relevant people but not people who don't need to know.

William, you naughty boy, being responsible for closing the boards.

In the 1980's I was an Assistant Inspector (i.e. Auditor) for a well known B....Bank. We visited Wrexham branch and spent two weeks attempting to work out the lineage of the various Jones families.

Wrexham branch held the record of the most Jones of any other branch in the country, at the time. In the end we had to give up, and concede that the branch manager knew who he was dealing with.

There were so many accounts that the manager had resorted to calling them Jones, W R, the Butcher, and Jones, W R the Joiner.

Wonderful memories.

Although there are those that take advantage of their anonimity Sue.As far as those who would maybe act inappropriately,I have always asked myself this, given that we often struggle with our various families,I'm quite sure there are much easier ways of gaining illicit info than delving among genealogical Sites.

I have found this site invaluable. I have been contacted by members sharing the same gt grandparents on my father and mothers side. I have been sent photo's of the house 2xgt grandparents lived in and photo's of the graves

As I dont live in England I could never have found these myself.

I have noticed Ed hasnt come back to reply on his thread.
I guess he was wind up merchant after all

I suppose it depends how you view this site.

GR has been invaluable to me over the years....I have been in touch with many cousins that I never knew existed both here in England and overseas..

I found one cousin in the US who was able to send me the funeral cards of my 2x gt Grandparents who were buried here in Dover....a great cousin and friend now! In turn I was able to find the grave of our 4x gt Grandparents in Devon and other ancestors...sent photos etc.

A distant member of my family by marriage that I found on GR put me intouch with another distant member of my family (not on GR) who then put me in touch with my 2nd cousin in Canada (not on GR) who sent me a photos of my Grandfather, my gt Grandmother and other photos of my gt Aunts and Uncles..again we have become great cousins.

I found 2 distant cousins of my husband in Aus...we joined forces to research the family history...speak on the phone etc!!

Not to mention the friends I have made by asking or answering questions on tips and records who keep in touch via email.

All this to me is priceless...!!

Sorry to go on...

Linda

ps William.... any chance of you finding anything out about the parentage of my 3x gt Grandfather b1825 Aberystwyth..William Williams!! His father was William Williams occup game keeper. Only joking LOL.

Is this site for sad lonley people whe are not doing genuine research,I agree that it has helped me but i am a bit bemused at some of the hot matches i am sent and the stupid messages people send to each other it,s like school girls texting each otheria on this site for research then off

Joy Report 18 Jun 2008 09:18

I wouldn't say that it is a joke, Ed.

I would, however, agree with a review in a recent issue of a family history magazine, that full membership of £9 something for six months is not good value for money; it seemed as if the reviewer did not know about the two-tier price system.

There are some people in the site with whom I have become friends, some good friends, and I know there are a few cyber trolls.

I have received invaluable help with lateral thinking; but, as far as contacts are concerned, on this site some hot matches are pointless as the place of birth is totally different, and my useful family contacts have been found through rootsweb mailing lists.

Yes, I remember when the site's boards were closed for a few days when GR made a huge mistake.

So, a joke? No, not in my opinion. It is certainly not a laughing matter that non-controversial, sometimes genealogical threads are deleted in error by GR.

Will I renew my membership next April? I doubt it; partly because I am uncertain that the site has anything more to offer me, and partly because I have little more to offer the site.

Joy Dean .... who pays £7.50 annual membership.

Ah yes, the great shutdown!!

Joy was declared Tips Board mascot along with Glen and Paul (after an hilarious evening of fun on the old hustings whilst election campaigns were fought and won all round) because funnily enough Ed had thrown his dummy out of the pram on that occasion and said he wasn't going to be a member any longer - which as a shame as, until that point, he was the board mascot. We had great fun with Ed, always posting, making outlandish claims and running away - much the same as he's done with this thread (and numerous others in between times).

Good to see things never change!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reg has hit the nail on the head again. Well said, Reg. :-))
Stephen - two points! :-))
*whispers* this site can be invaluable for some housebound members. I hadn't thought of that until it was pointed out on a previous thread.

Secondly, *giving Stephen The Look* it should be "school persons texting eachother ...." etc.

*can't believe self has been Politically Correct and runs off thread*

Some people EH! I have found some great people on these boards and some great information too.. I would still be struggling with my Welsh side without William and have now found living people through the information he gave me. (Local Knowledge)..
The idiots are easy to ignore when the real gems are there!

Amanda S

Amanda S Report 18 Jun 2008 17:53

On internet forums such as GR it is the norm for people to to use a board name.

Some people choose to use their actual name; that's up to them. That doesn't in any way imply that those - the majority, who adhere to the norm - are in any way underhand, or do not have the courage to associate their names with their opinions. To imply this is unfair and completely unreasonable.

I used my full name up until about a year ago when a lot of people became concerned about security issues and changed their board IDs. I then changed to "Miss Marple", but have always signed posts as "Amanda".

As Sue from Somerset and others have pointed out, there are personal security issues to be considered. This is especially true when people have unusual names. I'm not talking here about identity fraud (though it is always a possibility) but more about personal safety.

And, apart from that issue, it is surely the information and/or opinion being given which should interest other members, not the name or personal details of the person giving it. That's irrelevant.

As I'm not a doddery sweet old lady, and never really liked being called Miss Marple, I'm now changing back to my own name ..... in part.

Actually guys, this site closed down nearly 2 years ago now following all the hoo ha - cos a bunch of us moved into FTF in September 2006 - amazing how the time has flown and from those few people we now have 3500 members on there

I still enjoy coming over here occasionally - FTF hasnt got the huge membership GR has basically because GR charges a fee and can advertise all ove r the world. But it is still worth the money for the occasional hot match which is really hot.
