i just joined ancestry.com cos i've not been having much success on certain branches of my tree via the free and "buying credits" routes (after intial success which probably gave me a false sense of security ) ///

i dunno if its just me or is that site soooo confusing .. and although i type a birth as 1923 it just gives me names in the 1800's ///

perhaps im doing something wrong, but im all confused and annoyed now

???

Sam Report 16 May 2008 13:05

Births from 1923 are not completely indexed yet so you may not find them by entering a name and year on the main search page, you will need to go directly to the FULL BMD indexes and search manually.

Start off with a tick in "exact matches only"

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 16 May 2008 13:12

if you want 1923 then you would need to look at the FULLrecords
The records that come up if you type the name in the search box are from FreeBMD which is a site sponsered by Ancestry. that get accessed too though them
You would need to click on the line underneath the search box that reads Go Directtly to UK Births Marriages and Death Records. then click on the type you want .then you fill in the name but have to search on a qrtr by qtr each year.

every time i tick exact matches its told me there are no matches

(for people i have already found in various other places but wanted to search further )

Ancestry can be quite cumbersome to get around, but I'm finally getting there with it myself. Stick with it.

Ancestry is a good tool as it has a lot of databases and downloaded family trees but takes a bit of getting used to.

For dates I find it is better to give a fairly restricted range first. So if I'm looking for Joe Smith born c1850 I would start with that year and if that produced nothing increase it by a year either side. This is because of the way ages are recorded: in three monthly bands or Quarters for BMD - but those quarters refer to when the event was registered not the actual date - and yearly for censuses.

Censuses can be a problem because the age recorded is for birthdays that fall within the preceding 12 months from the date of the census, generally taken during April in England and Wales. So if, for example, the census was on the night of 7th April 1881 a birthdate of 8th April 1879 would give an age of one year; whereas a birthdate of 6th April 1879 would give an age of two years. Also, always remember that many people did not know their real age in the 1800s and so guessed, others lied.

Also, Ancestry gives you the option of searching in particular countries only and you can restrict that even further by selecting a particular county. This can be a good way of filtering out a lot of irrelevant names.

Happy hunting

Daniel Draper c 1804
he married before 1837 so you will not find on Ancestry
You should look for a birth of one of the children. The cert will give Janes maiden name.

Thelma Report 16 May 2008 15:53

Well I can find the birth of George R Woodhall mmn Harrop
You have to search the"complete index"

Thelma

Thelma Report 16 May 2008 16:11

1851
James Draper abt 1771 Chobham, Surrey, England Head Otford, Kent

Susan Draper abt 1765 Yaxley, Sussex, England Wife

well here's George Robert from Ancestry FULL records searched by the qtr for yr 1923.

Mar Qtr 1923
George Robert Woodhall mmn Harrop Barnsley 9c 392.

You wont get parish records on Ancestry for the marriage of Daniel Draper you may find the family tho on the census and if there were any children born after July 1837 ,and their births were registered, then a birth cert will give Janes maiden name

They might also be on Pallot's marriage index on Ancestry - a lot of that is pre-1837

thankyou all so much for the info

i feel a bit fick not being able to understand it !!

its just frustrating when every search comes up with nothing ..
i've been looking everywhere for my grandad (woodhall) for days and found nothing .. yet several of you have found him .

i was gonna ask how i look further back than 1837 ? but perhaps for now its safer to stick with stuff thats (supposedly) easier to find (HEHE)
