Is there an easy way of finding out adoption info? Apparently my husbands grandfather was adopted (Cecil E Whitaker married Elizabeth Newlove 3 qtr 1916 in Ecclesall. She was born 1894) but can find no birth record of him. Where do I go from here?

Until the 20th century there was no formal process of adoption, so few paper records were created. It wasn't until 1st January 1927 that adoption certificates were issued in the UK
