I have an address which was sold in 1989 by an Elizabeth Palmer.

Now, above the door the name under the boards and paint is J & E Pearson.

A lady close by remembers a woman called Elizabeth running it as a sweetie shop.

This is borne out by the electoral rolls, which have James and Elizabeth running it in 1949. James has disappeared in 1950 and Elizabeth changes address from 295 to 298. She appears to be living with daughter Joan but the following year Elizabeth Pearson changes to Elizabeth Palmer still living with Joan Pearson at 298.

No Mr Palmer at any time.

The earliest electoral roll at the local library is 1949 so am I just going to have to go to to Lancashire Records office to get the earlier info?

I wanted to get tenants and numbers linked between a change of address. At one timet the row of shops was known as Queen's Terrace and numbered from about 15 to 37 (that I can identify). I don't know when this happened and I don't know which of those numbers corresponds to 295 and 298.

I hope someone can understand this and point me in the right direction to carry on my search of tenants and match the numbers!

Many thanks

Abigail

You might find it useful to try and look at trade directories for the period too, some of the later ones are compiled on a less frequent basis but you can usually search them by address and also type of business.

The library, archives, historical directories website (might be a bit late for there though) and possibly Family History Society publications might help.

Also look for historical books about the area, you might be lucky and find the library/archives have a collection of photographs for the town/street too and maybe even street maps with the "old" and "new" names which might narrow down the timeframe.

Thanks Glen

It might have to wait till winter then as I can't afford the time for a trip to Preston. I now run the shop that I am researching!

Thank you for your suggestions - I will keep chasing the directories in the local library.
