If you aren't prepared to spend at least some money to verify info, it may be a good idea for you to give up this hobby...........unless you don't mind whether your 'tree' is accurate - or not.

This isn't a cheap hobby.

Sooner or later you will need to spend to prove an ancestor is really yours.

Perhaps you already know your great grandparents names but sometimes it is really easy to make a false assumption.

I'll give you an example.

A few years ago I was in contact with a lady who descended from a Lilian who was on my tree (my ancestral aunt). We sent messages back and forth by e-mail and compared notes. We knew Lilian's place and year of birth and found her on censuses. We knew Lilian had a daughter called Hilda.
Gradually though things started unravelling because it became obvious that stories told by my older family members didn't match up with some facts found by my new contact.
Eventually she did what she should have done right at the start and she bought her Lilian's marriage certificate.

That gave her Lilian a different father from the one on my tree and more research showed there were two girls of exactly the same name (not a common surname) unrelated but born in the same year and within streets of each other.

So unless you are really sure of your facts you will need to work out which certificates you need to prove the accuracy of your tree as you go along.

My poor contact (no longer my distant cousin but still a friend) had been researching the wrong family for several years. Her findings helped me but she had to begin again from scratch!

This site if you want to order certs online. Cost will be £7. Do no use any other online site as there are a lot ot con merchants offering it get you certs for up to £30

Order a copy of the cert online from the GRO which will you £7 & arrive by post

I have got the district, folio & page number for my grandmother's birth registration; what do I do now? i.e. is a visit to a records office necessary or is there a place on the net where I may be able to look up the details on the bc?
