Hi Mark, also take into consideration as to the regiment, a regular in the cavalry would be a trooper to begin, an infantryman would have the rank of rifleman, a soldier in the artillery was a gunner and so on, dragoon, guardsman, fusilier, loads of names. Define his regiment and go from there. good luck, Derek in France |

In ww1, regular meant professional soldier - the next level down was the territorial units, who'd had some weekend training. |
