I found out yesterday that my gr gr grandfather was a bigamist.
I've had help trying to find him on the 1891 & 1901 census' with no luck.
He first married in 1862. In 1866 his wife re married stating she was a widow. In 1867 he also remarried again claiming to be widowed.
How would I find out if he was ever caught for marrying twice?
I was wondering that maybe if he was found out that could be why he & his family can't be found after 1881.
Could he have been hiding do you think?
Would he have had any warning that he had been found out?

I'm clutching at straws.

I've posted his details before but no one could find him.

I really just need to know wether or not he would have been aware if he'd been caught out & if anyone knows how I would be able to find out if he'd been caught.

If he had been caught there ought to be a court case and a prison sentence I think.

Perhaps he might be mentioned in a local newspaper report.

If he wasn't actually prosecuted ie went into hiding ran away etc but he was investigated would there be any way to find out?

I knew I was clutching at straws really. I was just hoping to find some explanation as to why his whole family except his eldest son have just disppeared after 1881. I'll just have to wait for 1911 to be released & see if I can find them all again then.
He and his first wife both remained in the same town when they re married.

I found a couple who were together in 1871
In1881 he emigrated told everyone he was a widower, He supposedly remarried became mayor of the town were he lived ,one of his sons later joined him.Then 10 years later he returned to England with his Wife?
who had travelled under her own name and promptly left him as soon as they arrived back
During this time his real wife had been living with her son's family
