I'd do the bloodline first too but I really enjoy doing trees for friends and relations, even if they are unrelated to me, so I'd do both!

.. Take the natural blood line first,,,,,as that is the genes link to your father,

you can take up the other one when you're more confident,

Technically you should research your dad's natural father because that's the blood line, but I would do both. I research my mother's step-mother. I knew her as Grandma and loved her dearly but I have no blood connection to her. My, she has an interesting family tree, though!

Pamela

If Alfred Collins was your dads natural father then you do have a blood connection with him.

No reason why you shouldnt research both rhough if you want to

Difficult. My Mum was adopted but so far I have only been able to trace her adoptive family, so have only gone back to the mid 1800s because they're not really anything to do with me.
I suppose you could follow both lines, but maybe start with your dad's blood father. That way you are tracing people who are actually related to you through births rather than marriages. If you find it starts to dry up you can always then follow the man who's name your Dad had.
I hope that all makes sense.:)

I'm new to researching my family tree and am unsure whether I should begin to research my Father's name (my maiden name) which was his Mother's husband's name (Thomas E. Dormer) OR whether to research his natural Father (Alfred Collins) who died when my Father was a teenager, but who was Father to my Dad and his two sisters. There was no second marriage. I have no personal connection to either of them.

Any ideas?
