You will need to register but can then search the oversea indices for free. There is a specific index for marine births, registration for which began in 1837.

Once you have the reference you can order a certificate, if you wish, through the GRO online using the section for overseas certificates.

Can anyone tell me please how to find details of a birth at sea. All I have is the surname Richardes the year is 1854 and they were returning to England from India
