It's a bit of a scrawl, but it might just be "traveller for tea".

Is this him in 91 - he is a Licensed Victualler - so he may have been "traveling" in something related to the pub trade 10 years before. (Funnily enough my GGFx2 was a traveller in one census and a Licensed Victualler in the next - may be it was a sort of training for the job). BUT its a common name. Im sure you are working backwards so you will be able to check out his jobs on other census.

Looks like Traveller frm London to me - The landlord has said, he is a (commercial) traveller from London. Its a pity it doesnt say what business he is travelling in. Have you checked other census for him?

Looking at maginified 200%, I think it says Traveller for Tow (something to do with rope?). The first letter of the last word looks more like the T of Traveller than the L London

Thank you both - sorry to drive you mad - would it say traveller in town?

µèÎÐΙ Report 29 Apr 2008 16:23

Hmmm....

I think it looks more like a "T", not an "L". It's exactly the same as the T in Traveller....

Wish I hadn't started looking now, it's driving me crazy and it's not even my relative!!!

Haha!

Yes, I see what you mean - I've just been looking at in again - you could be right - that does make more sense. Thank you for looking.

The wife had another baby in 1882. No father on the birth cert. Maybe that's why he ran.

Hello, does anybody know what sort of "occupation" this is?

The man with this occupation was boarding in Worsley, Lancashire during the 1881 census. He originally came from London.

He left his wife and small child in London and never returned home to them.

Any ideas .... does it mean he ran away?

Thank you
Karen.
