Thank you, that seems to make sense. I only know for definite what's on their marriage certificate which doesn't give her father's age nor her mother's name. Their first son was named John and the second one Joseph according to later census records.
Unless something else comes up to indicate otherwise I think I'll go with John/Joseph being the same person.
thanks for doing the lookups.

Joseph John is a definite theory.

But why not try 1851? Here's a possibility -- Jane with father John and brother John:

Name: Jane Heslop
Age: 4
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1847
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: John
Mother's Name: Mary
Gender: Female
Where born: Hallgarth, Durham, England

Civil Parish: Pittington
County/Island: Durham
Country: England

Registration district: Durham(Street Indexed)
Sub registration district: St Nicholas
ED, institution, or vessel: 10b
Household schedule number: 38

Jane Heslop 4
John Heslop 40
John Heslop 7
Joseph Heslop 2
Mary Heslop 38
Mary Heslop 10

Matches the 1861 Joseph Heslop household in all respects!

editing to add the 1861 household:

Ann Heslop 8
Ellenor Heslop 6
Jane Heslop 14
John Heslop 17
Joseph Heslop 49
Joseph Heslop 12
Mary Heslop 48

I've got a copy of my great-grandfather's marriage cert from the GRO: John Chicken married Jane Heslop, 14 Dec 1868 aged 23. His father's name is given as John Chicken which ties in with stuff I have from census & IGI site. But her father's name is given as John Heslop, whereas the only family I can find in census information for 1861 in the whole of County Durham has Joseph Heslop as its head, though Jane has a brother John in that census.
I'm fairly sure they'd be in Durham at that time as she was born in Belmount in Durham and married in Dalton le Dale while living in Murton Colliery.
How likely do you think it is that either the census or the marriage cert has his name wrong? Or should I be looking for them living elswhere in 1861?
I know that my great-grandfather was christened Stephen John but went by John for most of his adult life which confused me at times, so I did wonder if perhaps Jane's father was Joseph John.
Any ideas most welcome.
Thanks in advance
