Julie
It was 'I don't see anywhere on here stating that the whole point of this site is to share

I wish people would stop making others feel bad or that they shouldn't be here just cos they don't.

i don't open my tree, that my choice' which made me wonder if you did. I thought maybe you were thinking I was having a dig at those who don't open trees, which I wasn't.

Just so you don't misunderstand, I said that I'm happy for people I share with to use my info, and that is what the site is about. Spreading info on trees you share. I quite understand some people don't want to open their trees and that is entirely their perogative, but once you open your tree you are inviting people to share your info.

The answer is simple. If you don't want someone to look at your tree then don't let them. But it does beg the question why you publish the information on a public site in the first place - why not just keep your tree on your PC at home.

If you do let someone see your tree then expect that they may make use of as much or as little information that you have given them access to.

There is always a feeling with this subject that anyone who make use of information in another's tree are acting deviously or underhanded, when, in fact, most are just doing what they believe is a perfectly legitimate way to follow their hobby

Why can't people be nice to each other anymore. I'm new to GR and it's opened up a whole new hobby for me and if people are kind enough to open their tree for me, I think they are fantastic.
So come on people, most of these reli,s are dead but at least this way, they're not forgotten..

Best regards to everyone

I don’t have any problem sharing my tree as long as there is a valid connection, but I make a point of saying that not everything in my tree is 100% verified yet.

If there is I’ll email relevant certs, photos etc and quite often I’ll get some in return. I don’t see the point of everyone spending so much to gain the exact same information!

To clarify what I said earlier- if you open your tree the person is within their rights to copy the lot. This is NOT to say that a feel that this SHOULD be done.

This is the very reason that I choose NOT to open my tree. YES, I share information, certs photos etc but at the end of the day I didn't sit here for hours on end for my work to be copied by someone who has NO intention of doing any work of their own.

It's an unfortuante fact that lots of people join GR with the impression that they can gain a tree on the strength of their Hotmatches.

Like Julie, I spend hours trying to help the Newbies get started only to hear them say "I can't afford Ancestry, it's too dear". Mention investing in a cert, "goodness me, that's £7!"

THIS IS NOT A FREE HOBBY

I don't really see what the difference is between 'shared trees' and 'shared information' except that one is in a linear format.

I guess for some people it is a case of "mine, mine, MINE!" They probably didnt share their sweeties and toys as children either.

Some people use this site purely to build their tree and nothing else - so they are not interested in sharing their information, nor do they want information from others.

Others are on here to share and exchange information about their ancestors - and get to meet some lovely people while they do that.

I have learnt that there are all sorts in the world, and on this site..... and those with the heads up their A** I just avoid.

Julie Report 28 Apr 2008 10:17

You're right you don't understand cos i said i don't open my tree..i never said i didn't share info...and the title of the thread states Shared trees

Lesley\Suzanne

Lesley\Suzanne Report 28 Apr 2008 10:14

I genuinely don't understand all the secrecy. Is it monetary? The fact that it has cost you a few bob on subscriptions and certificates?

Julie

Julie Report 28 Apr 2008 10:11

Yes Mick, you're right

And you know why, cos my opinion is different,

Lesley\Suzanne

I rest my case.

Sorry i disagree with you Sally & Joyce....I don't see anywhere on here stating that the whole point of this site is to share

I wish people would stop making others feel bad or that they shouldn't be here just cos they don't.

i don't open my tree, that my choice

Joyce

Joyce Report 28 Apr 2008 09:14

Yes, as Sally says this is the whole point of "genes reunited". I am happy to be in communication with very distant "relations" on all sides of the tree and if we can help each other it is all the more interesting. I now have regular contact by e-mail from "distant cousins" met through this site. Joyce

SallyF

SallyF Report 28 Apr 2008 08:35

Apart from living relatives I have no objection to people I share with using my info. That's the whole point of this site really. And a relative even by a distant marriage is still a relative. Personally if people have married into our family and there are no offspring I still like to have the new persons parents down on my tree. It ties up a loose end in my mind.

Merlin38

Merlin38 Report 28 Apr 2008 08:24

Have to agree with Claire. If the contact has opened their tree for me to study, and this happens more often than not, and a connection somewhere seems likely, I make a point of saying they are free to copy whatever they feel is useful. We are after all, leaves on a very large worldwide tree.

If I copy details of living relatives, these do not find their way onto my GR tree without the other person's agreement.
