Hi all!

I was wondering if anyone could help me. I am looking for a Hannah Storrar nee cooksey who was in a mental institute. She was born in 1827 in islington london and died on 1/10/1902 in islington, london. I know she was in a mental institute but i'm not sure if she died in there...? She was married to John Storrar and they had 11 children!

Any information would be great :D

Thanks

Steph

oh thanks :) so if shes not in the 1891 census that probably means she went in the asylum after 1881 and before 1891.

If she's in a mental hospital, she'll be listed in the census under her initials only.

Stephanie

Stephanie Report 25 Apr 2008 23:49

oh so she would still be listed, thats good news... would she have been listed at the mental hospital address?

MaryfromItaly

Steph, she would most likely have been recorded with JUST her intitials, no surname. Therefore even if you did find someone in an asylum with tyhe initials HS then I don't know how you could ever know whether it was Hannah or not.

It's not true that all mental hospitals list inmates by initials only. To see an example that gives normal names (The County Lunatic Asylum at Morpeth) look in 1881 for Alice McDowall with spouse/head=Thomas in Northumberland, and then page forward (alt., move thru "next household"s on LDS site). The first few inhabitants of the asylum are the resident staff and their families (sometimes some staff are in adjacent - both in real life and the census page sense - detached buildings). The inmates follow.
