Genealogy Chat

I subscribe to the Genealogist and Ancestry too and usually flit between the two, finding something on one which is not on the other. The Genealogist also has a thing where you can click on the occupation and it tells you what exactly the job involves.

Like Tiger Lil says there are some parish records, but they add more now and again, you can also search wills, although from limited areas.

It also gives you a button to click if you find something on the transcribed part of the census which you can press and it saves it to your research log exactly as it is on the original typed copy.

Saying all that, if I had to choose, it would be ancestry which won hands down just for the large amount of information you can find on there alone.

Ancestry does have some parish records, but a lot of them are not transcribed, you have to download the actual image and then search through them.

I have forgotten now how I found them, lol but I have found some very useful info for some of my ancestors.

Like Tiger Lil I subscribe to both and although the Genealogist hasn't got as much info as Ancestry I prefer the way it lays out the census transcripts. I'm getting to the point now were I don't need anymore census info, so I'll probably drop my subscription, but if are at the begining of your quest then it is a good site.

I use The Genealogist and Ancestry. One of the things I like about The Genealogist is that when you search for a name in the census, it also displays the exact address in the results screens. I have also sometimes found census details on The Genealogist that I have been unable to find on Ancestry (usually due to names being wrongly transcribed).

It does have some parish records but not all of them so it depends which ones you need - if you let me know the areas you are looking for I can check for you.

I do like The Genealogist, but I wouldn't use it as my only source - I wouldn't be without Ancestry.

Hi Sue - This was one of the very first websites I signed up to years ago - but after signing up using my PC at home I found I was unable to access the site from the PC at work - it caused me inumerable problems and after emailing them continually about the problem and being told I could only log on elsewhere 3 times, I didn't bother renewing my subscription with them. Besides, I then discovered Ancestry and found that more suitable and easier to use and I use other websites for parish records, such as familyhistoryonline.net, which is only £5 to subscribe and lasts me months.

But if you're only using the one computer then I guess it won't cause you any hassle.

The other thing that annoyed me with them was that I did some transcribing for them and after having spent many hours putting a lot of effort into it and sending them pages and pages of entries - I didn't even get a thank you!

I do know a cousin of mine uses the site and hasn't had any problems as far as I'm aware.

Does anyone subscribe to the web site the genealogist, where you can apparently view parish records online? I was wondering if its any good and worth the money.
