Christian name - Catton

Has anyone come across the female christian name Catton? I have found this on a census image, but the only possible marriage I have found for this pair is with the christian name Catherine. Is Catton perhaps a shortened version of Catherine?

(I'm not likely to send for the certificate. I'm only on the nether regions of a twig of the tree but just like to fill in the details. If I said how distant this lady is from me, you would call me a name collector but I'm not!)

Thanks for those Jim, I had a look around and had found some, but the only marriage I have found for the man is to either a Catherine or Ann. I will go off and do a search of the earlier census images and see what I can find.

Thanks for your help.

I suppose it's conceivable that when filling in the marriage certificate, she said her name was Catton and the registrar or clergyman thought, "She can't have said Catton, she must have meant Catherine".

I have actually got a very distant relation by marriage named Catton Shimeld in my tree.

Thanks Kate,

I will delve a little more, but I have found the same family in another census and the wife is down as Catherine on that one, with the same birthplace. She could be the same person, but with the way my distant family had multiple marriages following a death I may never know.

Thanks for the input.

Joan,
Sorry I'm late in replying - been tending to the elderly Mum-in-law.

I agree with what you say, and it could be the answer to the puzzle, but there are no other abbreviations like that on the page.

I will just accept that she is Catharine - as shown on some census images.

She is quite distant really - a great aunt's mother-in-law and, with all the inter-marriages in my family - my aunt's mother-in-law too. (They didn't get around much in rural Lincolnshire!)

I'll put her to one side for now.

Thanks.

One of my ancestors has the name Kattern, which is the forerunner of Katherine.

Alison.

Alison,

Thank you for adding that. I have never come across that one before.

For the time being I have left her as Catharine - one of the spellings on the census and on the FreeBMD record. I will track her further eventually, but will leave her now for one of the other twigs!
