Working in the West Indies

I have an ancestor who was working in Demerara in the late 19th century in quite a resposible position. He died on Poplar railway station of a heart attack brought on by a bout of yellow fever he had contracted the year before. I am very interested to know how he came to be working in the West Indies in that sort of position as his siblings appeared to be manual workers. Any ideas anyone?

What is his occupation in the last census before going overseas?
Can you give details of this please?
