According to the entries I have found by typing the word into Google.

A BEADLE is a person who cites or bids persons to appear.

Or is an officer of the Parish.

Or is the Town Crier.

If he worked in a hospital it looks like he called the names out for people with appointments. I can't think of any other thing he would do in a hospital according to the meanings I have found.
