What's the date of the letter and what was his name? Does it give his regiment, or regimental number? |

If you want to post his details here, we can check for deaths in Australia. |

What I am after is to see if they have any record of what may have happened to my Great Grandfather. I have a copy of a letter sent from 'The War Office' to my Grandmother, regarding my Great Grandfather's death. I believe he died in Australia, as I have found his passage there in 1911, but can't be sure if he stayed there, as his second marriage broke up shortly afterwards. Obviously the war office dealt with notifying his death to my Grandmother, so I'd hope they had something, although if lots of stuff was lost in the bombing I may be out of luck. I just don't know who I should approach to see if there would be anything. |

MOD is the Department of State that was the renamed War Office. It is a single department. There are not 'so many'. |

My OH thinks that many records were destroyed by a direct hit during WW2 as his mother used to work in the War Office. But he´s not sure. Maybe someone else would know. Good luck |

Does anyone know what department now days, deals with matters that were previously dealt with by the war office? I've looked up 'The War Office' on Google and it seems to give the impression that 'The War Office' no longer exists. I want to trace the department that would be able to look up records held in the first half of the 1900's by the War Office. Anyone who's not already lost and who could give me any idea would really be a big help. |
