Maybe off beam here because of the date but I had a notion that the Order of St Andrew was the Scottish version of the Order of St John Ambulance Association. Possibly not around in the 1800s though

Hello Ivy and Alistair

I looked at the Order of the Thistle website but my William Robertson was not there.
I have my Great Grandmother Lillias Robertson's bible presented to her in 1869 by her brother.
It must be that William joined a group dedicated to St. Andrew.
I am sending for a marriage certificate for Lillias 1856-1934 to John Sargant in South Australia in 1875 to find her father's name to help with my research.

I followed Alistair's link - they meet twice a year in New York, so I wondered if you would find a sea crossing, but osa-anglican were founded in 1986.

I wonder if your ancestor's local church was dedicated to St Andrew and formed some group which your ancestor joined? How old would your ancestor have been in 1875?

Unfortunately, it is unlikely to be the Order described above (you do not join the Order of the Thistle....it is conferred upon you....and you would be most unlikely to refer to it as the Order of St Andrew).

Probably one of the various religious organisations which uses the name, eg. http://www.osa-anglican.org/

Looks fairly rare privilege....

"The "Order of Saint Andrew" or the "Most Ancient Order of the Thistle" is an order of Knighthood which is restricted to the King or Queen and sixteen others. It was established by James VII of Scotland in 1687."

I have a family bible which states a relation joining the Order of St. Andrews in 1875.
Any information would be appreciated.
