My great uncle died in WW1. I have found a reference in the GRO War Deaths Index but don't know whether this is like a death certificate. Can anyone please tell me what this is and how i get a copy. I can't find any reference to it on the GRO website.

IF he died in WW1 his death should be on the CWGC website.....it should give his date of death and where he`s buried, and his family details if known, you can then print it all off like a certificate.

If you've got the reference from GRO WAR DEATHS ARMY OTHER RANKS (1914 to1921) ie
Name: Alfred W
Rank: Sgt
Number: 61477
Unit: RFLR
Year: 1917
Vol: I 82
Page 128
then you can just apply for the certificate in the normal way from the GRO

Many thanks MB. I've placed an order so I'll see what turns up. Thanks Nicky, I've already got the CWGC stuff
