Hi

I have found a relative of mine Shem Hearnden and his daughter Sarah on the 1851 Jersey census, in the box headed Whether Blind or deaf & dumb, both names have a tick against them, does this mean they were both classed as this??

Can you find them on an earlier or later census to check that info

I would think so.

Hi Siobhan

I think they usually say which - blind or deaf - so it might be worth examining the census to see if the enumerator was making his ticks and marks without regard to where he was putting them. They used to draw lines and ticks when counting up etc. Just a thought.

Half the names on the page have ticks against them

1861 Sarah is not listed as having any disability

Thanks guys I'll have a closer look, it seems to me they may have been ticking off, ie: when they had counted or maybe not lol

Thanks Mary, and everyone although this has now confused me a bit more as it loks like there were quite a few Hearndens who moved to the channel Islands, maybe they all link to me somehow lol
