on the 81, 91 & 01 census, 2 of my husbands rellies give place of birth as Gate Beck, Westmoreland,

their births were registered in Kendal district, but I cant find Gate Beck listed as a parish or a hamlet in that district or any where in Westmoreland.

does anyone with local knowledge recognise this place and could perhaps give its modern name please.

Their father died soon after the birth of last child and we assume was buried there, so would like to know which parish is the most likely resting place

Only found one reference when I did a Google

Thomas Winder born Gate Beck in 1817.

He is on 1841 census - might give a clue as to location - but that address is not showing against the Winder family.

Gatebeck...is near Endmoor... and yes they would both come under Kendal District maybe this will help.

Walker , Thornley and Hunt from Westhoughton area Lancashire also Cooper, James, Roscow, Scowcroft from Horwich and Bolton area of Lancashire and James from Westmorland

If the father is buried in the area I would think it will be at St Patricks church,Preston Patrick.

thanks eveyone,

the family came from dorset and his widow & daughters returned there, but they would have had to bury him in Westmoreland.
He used his own name and his step fathers name so we have one daughter registered as Kiddle and the other as Mullet, and his death registration is in the name of Mullet!!! Husband thinks he was one step ahead of the debt collectors.
