Are you sure they owned the farm?

My husband's ancestors had a farm in Northumberland for many years but we have found that they leased the farm from the owner who was a Countess. We managed to find a copy of the lease from 1844 (it was a large 11 page A3 document and gave lots of information about what he could and couldn't do with the land, some accounts, rent he paid and lots of other interesting facts).

well thats a thought. what seems strange is that on some census they are down as being farmers employing 6 men and publicans and living in the pub . why would they be living in the junction hotel yet have a large farm and employ 6 men. would this make you think they either owned or leased the farm. i know that 2 brothers also booght a cottage and rented it out.
kath can you tell me where you found your documents i have no idea as to where to start looking
thanks linda x

We found the documents at an archivesd in Newcastle (can't remember what it was called just now).

We actually went just to look at the Tithe Maps from the 1840's to see who actually owned the land as we didn't think the family were wealthy enough to own the farm.

We found that this Countess was the owner, and as we were looking at the map one of the people who worked at the archives came over and just asked if we had found what we were looking for. We said we had and told him about the farm and gave him the farm name. He then said "I'm sure we have some documents about that farm somewhere". We were just really lucky because he brought out this massive lease agreement which has my husband's ancestors signature on it. He photocopied all the documents for us and sent them on to us (he couldn't do them straight away).

how good is that . you must have had a great smile on your face that day. i dont think this family has a lot of money but they did buy other properties to rent but not enough to own a farm though. i will just have to see if i can come up with anything i wonder if lancashire records office might hold anything
thanks again kath for your help

my f-i-l's family has farmed a large place near Kendal since at least the late 1800s, and one side was involved prior to that.

Descendents are still farming there

BUT they are and were always yeoman farmers, living and working on a place owned by someone else. The land and properties were sold on about 10 or so years ago ....... but the new owners also wanted to be absentee owners, so the "family" is still there.
