Hi all i am trying to help a friend find an ancestor its baffling me as
he can be found on 1881-1891-1901 census's but not before !
His name is Joseph Curtis born 1853 Frindsbury Kent i also found
his birth in the index's he married Sarah Slaughter in 1876 in Steyning Sussex . Have tried everything any suggestions?

Yes thats him your having the same problem as i am been looking for a while now just cant find him on those two census.

Thanks Lindsey i dont think thats joseph why would he be named as john and why Dover ? The distance between Frindsbury and Dover is quite a long way but josephs middle name was Samuel.

and many more !!
At a loss what to do next i will suggest to my friend to get the birth and marriage certificates for Joseph's fathers name maybe thats the way to go forward look for his father on the census, hoping that he didnt move to Frindsbury just before Joseph's birth

Thanks Andy i know he only used the name Curtis in later life do you think that Joseph Crozier was his birth father as his mother married the same year as Joseph's birth and being named the same .
Would appreciate any thoughts.(hope i am making sense)

Well done Andy.

Kaz, Joseph Crozier may have been his birth father, or not. He is probably in the census as Crozier because it was easier, or he used his stepfathers name during the time he lived there, and reverted to Curtis when he left home.

You should try to look at the original images of the baptism register, you would be surprised what the curate or vicar or parish clerk wrote in the register, notes which are not indexed. You could also see if his mother applied for a bastardy order, meaning the real father had to pay maintenance for his child.

You should be able to look on line at the City Ark site mentioned above. It will show the church records of the baptism.

Thanks Jill and Di i have been on the City Ark site and my friend has now got the birth certificate for Joseph Curtis and his father is not named but i assume he is the biological father because their marriage took place just after Joseph's birth and he carried his father's name , but thanks for the suggestions
