I would like some advice please - I have the page and volume numbers from FreeBMD for the death of my gggrandmother but the month differs from the burial record from the Southampton Old Cemetery Records. I would like to order the Death Certificate and would like to know whether I should use the FreeBMD reference numbers. Thanks for your time.

Hi Val
The date on Freebmd, is a quarter date, so Mar would cover Jan, Feb and Mar, if your gggrandmother died late in the quarter she could have been buried in April ( just an example)

I had a cousin killed in a car crash. I knew the year and month she died but couldn´t find her death registered at all. Eventually I found it registered two months later, not only it wasn´t the month, it wasn´t the year either as it had overlapped into the next year, also the place of death was different as it was in another county where she had been taken to hospital after the accident.

My father died in May but his death wasn't registered until July. Because of the circumstances, an Inquest was required, and the death registration could only take place after this had been held.

Thanks Chica and Peter for your interest, I am so sorry that I didn't develop an interest in this when I was much younger , my old cells need a lot of stimulation! I am also just learning to use a computer.

It's quite a similar situation with the birth records. I couldn't find myself in the December records having been born on the 14th, but I was in Jan, Feb and March of the next year so was registered quite a bit later than my actual birth.

Thanks Sally, they say one is never too old to learn ! I am proof of that as I am learning a lot from all the friendly, helpful people here.

For anyone that is not aware of this.

Deaths have to be registered within five days of the event, the exception being where there is an inquest, then registration is delayed until after the inquest and the informant will be the coroner. The coroner can consent to the burial taking place before the inquest, unless there are suspicious circumstances.

You have 42 days in which to register a birth, so for example, if a birth occured in late March it may be early
May before it is registered.
