Canadian Emigration and marriage

Hi

My grandfather divorced my grandmother and emigrated to Canada with his new wife to be. They married out there after 1968.

I am probably being rather daft here but did they sail on a boat or was there planes then? Is there anyway of me tracking how they travelled and anyway of finding there marriage out there?

Hi Angela,

You don't say what year your grandfather went to Canada, I assume early 1960's? if so they most probably went by sea.

Katrina on the Records Board is offering to do lookups;

"Does Anyone require help find relatives in Canada",

Otherwise post a few more details, where they went to in Canada, dob etc

I don't know what year they went, probably between 1964 and 1968. They were both british and my grandfather Herbert Donaldson was born in London in 1910, he died 1982. They lived in Sault St Marie in Ontario. I believe his wife Edith is still alive but I don't have any contact with her. It would be nice to find marriage details and year they emigrated to fill in a few gaps but there doesn't seem to be any websites that can help,

Re how would someone travel to Canada in the 1960s


We emigrated to the US in 1967, moving up to Canada in 1968.

We had a choice of travel ..... we could have taken the QE2 across the Atlantic to NY, or we could fly. Both fares cost about the same amount.

We in fact opted for the plane, and used the extra days that gave us to go up to Montreal to Expo 67 before taking up residence in Texas.

I think you might have problems finding their marriage ..... Canada has much more restrictive privacy laws than the UK. Plus records are kept independently by each province. There is no central registry.
