False Pretences

I have found a Prosecutors Bill in the Petty Session at Salford in 1840, John Braddock was found guilty of False Pretences and later in the year was declared bankrupt. I haven't been able to locate any information on his bankruptcy or why he was charged with false pretences. Any suggestions? Heather

If he was declared bankrupt later in the year, then I would imagine that he might have been trying to obtain money by false pretences - either from a bank or somewhere else. Perhaps he used a false name or something like that.

Kath, Hadn't thought of that. He stated he was a chemist and druggist and I wondered if he had overstated his qualifications. Heather

There are a few entries for his bankruptcy in the London Gazette where he is mentioned as Chemist and Druggist.

Just enter his name in the search facility and, if you want to, narrow the timeframe.
